Researchers from IIT Bombay have put their brains where their humanity lies and have developed an app that will help children with speech disabilities communicate better.
The app, called the Jellow Communicator, is a cheerful platform that offers easy interface to its users. Children can communicate what they want by simply pressing the right icons and images. For example, if they want food, they can click on options such as Lunch, Dinner, etc. and then click on their preference by clicking on the sub-categories that open (such as salad, roti etc.). It features a total of nine icons on the home page representing the main categories and 800 icons representing sub-categories and options.
Developed by a team from Industrial Design Centre from IIT Bombay, it can be used by children who have Down syndrome, autism, brain injury and cerebral palsy.
It comes in both English and Hindi and works offline as well once it is downloaded. It was created keeping Indian sensibilities in mind.

According to
DNA, Ravi Poovaiah, an IIT professor who was part of this project, said, "We restarted the work on the app one-and-a-half-year back. The new technology like touch-screen mobiles, tablets have helped us to practically execute the app which is simple to access and can be used anytime. The cost of these technologies have also reduced."

The researchers interviewed 30 children with speech difficulties and consulted with a therapist during the development of the app. The goal was to understand the problems the children face as well as the kind of issues they might have while using the app and addressing them well in advance.
